First we start with 15 and then the list will go down to 7 and then down to the top 3 nominees. Today, AMPAS (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) has selected the 15 movies as semifinalists for the 82nd Oscar for Achievement in Visual Effects. In January 2010, the members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee will narrow the list to seven and they’ll view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on Thursday, January 21 so they’ll vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre and televised live by the ABC Television Network.
This year’s been pretty grand for visual effects, huh? It’s actually been grand in general.
Avatar’s getting it for sure
I really want Where the Wild Things Are to be nominated, however they may go for something less practical and more showy like Transformers. However, that could easily get shafted because it really is just more of the same. But all three Pirates films were nominated in this category, so it could sneak its way in.
District 9 would be sublime. 30 million dollars and we got something that extraordinary? Yeah, a nomination is definitely deserved.
I want Star Trek as well, but regardless, ILM’s getting lucky this year.

they might as well just give the Oscar to AVATAR already and not go through this procedure at all LOL
