Let’s do a quick recap shall we on what we remember about the plans for a follow up movie to one of the biggest March opening of all time, the 2007 Spartan movie, 300, directed by Zack Snyder based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller. Last year, Snyder said that Miller will be writing and drawing the graphic novel that 300 sequel will be based on and Snyder also said that he would definitely direct the project and is looking forward to… Miller’s completion of the book. And then Snyder said Miller was traveling back to Greece to do his research and that it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain. We’re going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places. It’s going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids.”. This past summer Miller finished the draft for the graphic novel that WB and Legendary Pictures hope to be the follow-up. And now, Miller talked, via Los Angeles Times and said that the next story is called XERXES, he’s working on the artwork but Snyder is definitely interested in returning to direct the big screen version.
Miller is preparing a follow-up now titled “Xerxes,” which begins about 10 years before the events of “300,” and Snyder has expressed interest in it as a film property as well. “It’s the battle of Marathon through my lens,” Miller said Wednesday. “I’ve finished the plot and I’m getting started on the artwork.”
Miller said that during his research trips to Greece he realized that the myth and history overlap begins to blur, which adds to the storytelling allure. “The fact and the myth are inseparable and, believe me, when you go sailing for a while in the Aegean Sea, you start believing in Poseidon.”
He said “through my lens” which possibly means that once again he’s going to tweak history to make it bloodier and more interesting to read in pages and watch on screen.
According to Wiki, “The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. It was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece.”
At this point, I say bring on this XERXES, just as long as Miller doesn’t get to direct, remember how awful The Spirit was?! That was a painful experience.
