The Beatles would be so proud of this movie, it practically uses their timeless songs in almost every scene. It’s impressive how ACROSS THE UNIVERSE gives story to each song as if The Beatles themselves intended it that way when they wrote them. This weird drama is very… colorful, literally. You’d have smoke pot or take LSD to really enjoy this film to the fullest. One thing for sure, I’ll definitely buy the soundtrack CD because even though they’re all classic hits I’ve heard all my life, they modified it and made it their own.
Jude goes to America to find his father and falls in love with an American girl whose brothers is his best friend. Suddenly Vietnam War and Civil Rights era change their carefree life.
Visually, this movie is spectacular. I remember the preview saying ‘From the visionary director Julie Taymor’, no kiddin’!
Bono from U2 is in this movie. He’s scene was short but he did well, surprisingly well for a guy who’s not an actor.
This musical film stretches your imagination and plays with your head. The only greatest musical movie in my book is Moulin Rouge, the Nicole Kidman version.
My only disappointment about ACROSS THE UNIVERSE is that there’s nothing extraordinary about the story. I’m not saying it has to be complex because there’s always beauty in simplicity, it’s just that the love story presented by this film is nothing special, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. This is not the first movie to ever show storyline that spans across decades, but you’d go out of the theater after watching this and say ‘Well that was nice. What’s next?’
I do admire the fact that it’s original screenplay and the dedication that the actors put into their preparation for each choreography but it’s not in my list of one of the best films of 2007.
