The AMPAS must be really desperate and running out of option, they must really want to boost some rating and keep people watching the Oscars instead of falling asleep while watching the Oscars. Ever since Hugh Jackman turned down the offer to host for the second time in a row, they thought ‘mm.. why don’t we have a duo instead of just one host?!’ so they asked Tropic Thunder stars Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. but they said no. I can see Ben Stiller hosting, but RDJ, eh not so much. And now the job officially belongs to Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin…
I mentioned before that even though Jackman did an okay hosting job, I did miss hearing snappy jokes that only real comedians can deliver. Steve Martin may not be an admirable movie star anymore, those dreadful Pink Panther movies are just a few examples, but when he hosted back in 2003, he was off the hook, I remember even Roger Ebert gave grade A for Martin’s performance. This will be his 3rd Oscar hosting job.
But I’m not so sure about sharing the gig with Alec Baldwin. He was funny in 30 Rock only because Tina Fey and the rest of her writing crew are genius, his career would’ve been long forgotten if he hadn’t been in that show. Baldwin is an Oscar nominee (The Cooler), a fact that will stay with him for a while, but an Oscar host… well, it’s a gamble, AMPAS will either get the praise or take the heat for this one.
“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.
“I don’t play the banjo but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Baldwin.
