I was actually looking forward to see this despite the many times I’ve tried to make fun of Nicolas Cage and his whacky trailer for Werner Herzog-directed BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS. It has made its way through festival circuit to mixed reviews, I personally just wanna watch Cage’s over the top pill popping character who sees imaginary iguana and a dancing soul. The new take on Abel Ferrara classic was supposed to open on November 20th, 2009 in NY& LA and then it expands on Dec. 4th. But The Playlist has learned that it might the release date might have a slight change, it will now open on November 20th only in NY & LA and then… it goes straight to DVD and Blu-Ray…
Via blu-ray.com, First Look has announced that BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS will be released to home video on February 23rd, 2010. The blog can’t even remember the last time a studio announced the home video release of a film almost a month before it’s scheduled to open in NY and LA.
Well, I guess this means I really gotta make the time when it does hit L.A. They’ll probably show it at either Arclight Cinema on Sunset Blvd or the art house Laemle. I’ll mark my calendar. Check out the theatrical trailer
In Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs — while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (played by Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.
