I watched The Magnificent Seven, The Towering Inferno, and Papillon years ago, but even then I knew I was watching one of cinematic icons who was one-of-a kind. I see the stars that today’s teens are idolizing and none of them could come close to the charisma that King Of Cool radiated. I remember a couple of years ago there was a rumor that Brad Pitt might remake McQueen’s classic Bullitt..and I had my doubts because the chase sequence itself in the original movie was downright impressive and if the remake got made, the critics would not show mercy on Brad Pitt because he just ain’t Steve McQueen.
According to Variety, Producers Michael Cerenzie (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead) and Christine Peters have bought the rights to the biography STEVE McQUEEN: AN AMERICAN REBEL by Marshall Terrill.
The movie project that may go to Paramount will focus on Steve McQueen‘s rise to fame in the 50s when he got his big break starring in Somebody Up There Likes Me, the story will also deal with his love for motorcycles, fast cars, drugs and it’s not a biopic if it doesn’t expose the subject’s love interest or failing marriage, which in this case, McQueen three marriages, including his stormy relationship with Ali McGraw, and last but not least, his battle against lung cancer that finally took a toll on his life in 1980.
The title of the book is way too long and uncool, they should come up with a better title for the movie..like using one of McQueen’s nickname,.. BANDITO! That’d be awesome but then Mexican audience would think it’s a movie about one of their native heroes.
The million dollar question is… who’s cool enough to star as Steve McQueen? Any input?
