Carl Rinsch is a talented commercial director who’s supposed to have his limelight when Ridley and Tony Scott were vouching for him to take on ALIEN prequel but as we know, Fox wanted Ridley Scott to come back and so he answered the call again and Rinsch had to step aside. But it’s no pity party because Rinsch got himself a big project to work on when he signed on to direct the epic period samurai swordsmen titled 47 RONIN starring Keanu Reeves (not the Frank Miller’s Ronin that filmmaker Sylvain White has been circling). It’s Universal Pictures that’s willing to take a chance on Rinsch…
Besides 47 RONIN which is expected to start filming next year, according to Variety, Rinsch has also signed on to direct another remake that Universal has been developing for quite some time now, CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Using the script by Gary Ross who will also produce with Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman.
Here’s a fun fact, Ross’ father, Arthur A. Ross, co-wrote the 1954 original about a scientific expedition traveling up the Amazon River, that suddenly encounters a dangerous humanoid amphibious fish creature.
Director Breck Eisner of the upcoming THE CRAZIES remake was previously attached to THE BLACK LAGOON, he wanted the new film to be PG-13, he wanted to go for a dark and scary adventure tone and there were talks of 3-D. It’s not sure yet if Rinsch is going to stick with that same plan.
