Christopher Nolan Finally Talks THE DARK KNIGHT Sequel… Sorta

Christopher Nolan

All these rumors about who are going to be the next Batman villains from Johnny Depp as The Riddler to Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin, from Angelina Jolie to Cher as Catwoman.. it’s gotten ridiculous but no one could seem to get a direct word from the man himself, the genius, the brain, the awesome director Christopher Nolan, he’s been on vacation all these months,.. rightfully so…until recently when LA TIMES (lucky punk!) got to sit down with Nolan and had a chat. Most of the conversation is about what a gratifying situation it must’ve been so far knowing that THE DARK KNIGHT has reached about $1 Billion worldwide (and we’re not counting those bootleg DVDs in Asia).
But at the last part of the interview, Geoff Boucher cleverly put the question in a way that would make Nolan have to answer whether or not he’d do a third Batman film and this is what Nolan said..

Well … let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven’t been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.

So it depends on the story, he says..

Well I wouldn’t worry so much, because if the team David Goyer, Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan are in charge of the story again… the third movie should be in good hands.
The only thing needed now if for WB to get off its lazy ass and sign those people up and pay whatever money they ask for, to draft yet another amazing script for the next installment. And please… no more recast blunders like Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes… or like how IRON MAN 2 got Don Cheadle instead of keeping Terrence Howard.
There are talks of Oscars surrounding The Dark Knight,.. so although the DVD and Blu-Ray arrives this December 9th,… the party isn’t over yet.
