Screenwriter David Goyer previously said that his script for GHOST RIDER 2 was actually something that was already written 9 years ago but the studio chose to go with Mark Steven Johnson’s story instead for the Affleck flick in 2003. Now that Goyer is handling the sequel, he’s basically polishing his 9-year old script intended to be rated R but studio wants it PG-13, Goyer assures the fans that they might get away with a few things just like The Dark Knight did, and chatting with MTV, he also mentioned Casino Royale as the tone and direction he has in mind..

“This story picks up eight years after the first film,” said Goyer. “You don’t have to have seen the first film. It doesn’t contradict anything that happened in the first film, but we’re pretending that our audience hasn’t seen the first film. It’s as if you took that same character where things ended in the first film and then picked it up eight years later—he’s just in a much darker, existential place.”

“It’s not exactly a reboot,”
“I hate to say it’s more realistic, because he’s got a flaming skull for a head, but it’s a bit more stripped down and darker. It’s definitely changing tone. What ‘Casino Royale’ was to the Bond movies, hopefully this will be to ‘Ghost Rider.’”

Ya hear that my friends, You don’t have to watch the first film to watch GHOST RIDER 2. Actually, I’m jealous of those of you who didn’t get to watch the first Ghost Rider film, you have no idea how lucky you are to dodge that bullet.

It’s a good thing Goyer didn’t listen to Nic Cage’s silly idea of re conceiving GHOST RIDER story and turn it international. These days, it seems too easy for any sequel to just settle for worldwide setting or move the characters to Europe because they just don’t know where else to go from the first installment.

Sony has greenlit GHOST RIDER 2 so the project is happening and Nicolas Cage, unfortunately, is expected to reprise his role, he actually wants to return as the stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze who gives up his soul to become a hellblazing vigilante
