It’s old news that Johnny Depp has been attached to the movie adaptation THE RUM DIARY based on the novel by his late friend, gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson (Check out My Review of the documentary GONZO). But this is one of those projects that have been halted for a long time.
Recently, Thebadandugly stumbled upon a casting call for a female cast in THE RUM DIARY and it states that Depp is the lead star and the production starts in March 2009. This implies that it will be Depp’s next project.
However, as you all know, Depp’s middle name is “busy, busy, busy”,.. that and “swashbuckling”.. he’s got so many projects in his pocket, he won’t be filing for unemployment anytime soon. Depp is one of those who will never get affected by the crappy economy.
Depp will be playing the character Paul Kemp, another alter ego of Hunter S. Thompson when he was 22 years old. No worries, Depp can look like a 22 year old, have you seen in him in the recent golden globe awards?! That lucky bastard is the embodiment of Benjamin Button,.. he looks younger with time. And yes, just like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, once again he will see him experimenting with stuff I don’t even have the balls to try.
The casting director is eyeing Scarlett Johannsson or Keira Knightley for the female co-star but it’s still up for grabs.. so if you’re beautiful and you’re 25 years old and you don’t mind showing off your natural elements in front of the camera, go OVER THERE for details.

“STORY LINE: 1960: Divorced alcoholic and struggling novelist PAUL KEMP decides to kick around San Juan until his ship comes in, working as a journalist for a daily newspaper that’s on its last legs, drinking gallons of rum and experimenting with LSD. With his new friend BOB SALA by his side, he becomes entangled in a corrupt hotel development scheme with a slick PR consultant named SANDERSON, and falls in love with Sanderson’s unattainable girlfriend, CHENAULT. . .”
