DISCUSS: Is TWILIGHT Destroying The Minds of America's Youth Today??

One of the reasons I like reading Slashfilm is David Chen‘s articles, well-written and thought provoking, I came across his recent one where he observed some of the critics out there who think the poular vampier romance movie adaptation, TWILIGHT contains messages that are destroying the young minds of today’s generation.

I’ll just share with you some excerptes that Chen found and I must admit, these claims, accusation if you will,.. they make sense. Lucy Mangan at the Guardian said this..“It sounds melodramatic and shrill to say that Bella and Edward’s relationship is abusive, but as the story wears on it becomes increasingly hard to avoid the comparison, as she gradually isolates herself from her friends to protect his secret, and learns to subordinate her every impulse and movement to the necessity of not upsetting Edward and his instincts (”I could quite easily kill you, Bella, by accident”)

Maria Walters of Skepchick Blog had this to say…
The boy, in turn, never even shows any level of interest in Bella as anything more than physically attractive. He follows her around because he feels ‘protective’ of her. This works out well when she’s being attacked, but she doesn’t consider it even a little creepy that he’s following her, sneaking into her room at night and WATCHING HER SLEEP.

Now I’m not a master like David Chen, so you’re going to have to read the rest of it OVER THERE.

The way I see it,….All these arguments against TWILIGHT sound like something straight out of my Gender Psychology/Communication class back in College.
But having seen the movie itself at a midnight showing in a theater room full of hysterical teenager, I do feel a bit concerned that they might take what they watch and actually think that that’s how a guy should treat a girl, or that’s how a girl should treat a guy in order to be liked in return. I mean we’re talking about teen audiences who most of them are not 18 years of age. So there might be some level of ignorace taken into consideration. Their good judgment is not quite sharp yet.

Did you see the same harmful message when you saw TWILIGHT?
Or do you think we’re being too paranoid and that today’s teens are not that naive?
What should they do in the sequel NEW MOON to come across as more positive?
