I started my own FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION segment that is meant NOT for the obvious. And by that I mean, of course Oscar buzz will be surrounding Daniel Day-Lewis cause he’s Daniel freakin’ Day Lewis! But what about those overlooked performances this year?! I had Woody Harrelson of Zombieland for Best Actor and I had Sandra Bullock of The Blind Side for Best Actress. And now, for your consideration, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs for Best Animated Film.
The fact that Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs got nominated for Golden Globe is a good sign that it is not overlooked by some. Obviously Pixar’s UP is the front runner in this race but if I had my way, I’d put UP as part of the highest honor, Best Picture category. It’s been a while since Beauty And The Beast enjoyed that recognition anyway.
But back to Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, now I’ve said a thousand times before that I’m not an expert when it comes to animation, so I’m not even going to pretend…but in my review I mentioned that this is the movie that puts a smile on your face. The jokes were dead on funny, if not, funnier than Pixar’s UP, the adventure is exciting and thrilling and the adapted story by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, that touched the relationship between Flint and his dad is just as heartfelt as the parental relationship between Carl Frederickson and Russell.
Dreamworks Animation and Pixar had their shining moment for the past decade, it’s time for Sony Pictures. But the ultimate reason why I think Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs deserves this recognition is because the story was unique and it surprisingly had more substance to offer than just food falling from the sky. A son who wants to make his dad proud and a dad who accepts his son for his nerdy passion.
Here’s to the underdog… For your consideration…
