Actor Roy Scheider died today at 75 years old. Most of today’s generation probably don’t recognize him anymore but I still remember his iconic line from Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic blockbuster JAWS.
Roy who played Martin Brody in that movie was taken by surprise when Great White Shark appeared out of nowhere and almost ate him, he stood up, turned to his friend and said “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!” That line was voted no. 35 in the American Film Institute’s list of Best Quotes from U.S. movies.
That’s not his only great movies. He starred in two of my favorite crime thrillers of all time, The French Connection, for which he won his first Oscar nomination and The Marathon Man, starring the young Dustin Hoffman.
You can’t call yourself a movie fan if you haven’t check out those two classic hits.
His second nomination was for the movie All That Jazz.
According to Variety, the hospital doesn’t want to release the cause of death but Scheider has been known to have suffered from multiple Myeloma for the past two years.
To some. for the last two decades he may have been considered as yesterday’s news, but his contributions to the world of cinema will never be forgotten.
So long, Mr. Scheider (1932-2008)…. you did well.
