HAIRSPRAY 2 Is Happening

Hairspray

It’s official, whether or not you enjoyed the movie HAIRSPRAY last year, the second installment will be in development. I actually had a fun time watching the movie version, based on the popular broadway musical play. The songs were really catchy, it was easy to get lost in the tunes. Not bad, considering director Adam Shankman used to be known for weak stuff like Cheaper By The Dozen 2, The Pacifier, and Bringing Down the House.

He talked to Entertainment Weekly, revealing just a little bit of what he has in mind for HAIRSPRAY 2

“We just got an outline and some ideas from John Waters, and now we’re going out to writers,” director Adam Shankman tells EW exclusively. The story will follow Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) and her pals as they navigate the “next era of music,” the late ’60s. “That period was superpolitical,” Shankman adds, “it was a time of serious change.” No kidding: According to the filmmaker, heartthrob Link (Zac Efron) will channel his inner Austin Powers and become steeped in the British Invasion. “We’re trying to track, in a comedic way, the historical elements.”

At one point, John Travolta said that even though he had a blast being part of the first installment, he’s not down with any idea of sequels, mainly because he just doesn’t do sequels. That’s what concerns me, His was the most entertaining of all the characters, Travolta in a big fat lady make-up/dress all singing and dancing was hilarious, it’s gonna be hard to imagine HAIRSPRAY 2 without him, or a woman version of him, around.
Maybe Shankman’s going to do a recast, but who can replace Travolta in that role?
