Back in Spring, we were surprised by the info that the crazy filmmaker behind zombie nazi movie Dead Snow, Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola came up with the idea to develop a twisted version of the classic tale titled HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS, housed at Paramount and produced by the Gary Sanchez prods. folks, Kevin Messick, Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Chris Henchy. The two characters and their gingerbread house have gotten themselves some drastic treatment, fast forward to 15 years later… those kids have grown up and became specialized bounty hunters out to kill the ugly ol witch!
And now, Hollywood Reporter says scribe Dante Harper will write the screenplay which I can only assume will be faithful to whatever sick storyline Wirkola already crafted in his head. The movie is described as horror/comedy in the veins of Shaun Of The Dead, they’re aiming for gory but funny.
It seems like nowadays whenever anybody tries to make a horror/comedy film, they always look up to Shaun Of The Dead as their reference or inspiration. That movie has become like the holy grail for horror/comedy genre.
I’m actually looking forward to this re-imagining of HANSEL AND GRETEL, but let’s hope Ferrell and McKay let Wirkola do his job and not try to force any of their raunchy, tasteless, unfunny jokes into this movie. Although McKay previously went on the record saying that he could see this turned into a franchise or we would at least expect two more sequels after this installment.
