Earlier this month, word hit the web from European Media that the 2010 Cecile B. Demile award recipient, Martin Scorsese is eyeing the adaptation of THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET based on the best-selling children’s historical fiction book by author Brian Selznick. Variety gave confirmation today and so it’s official that this will indeed be Scorsese’s next project…
The live action feature will be produced by Scorsese’s The Departed Oscar winning producer Graham King who’s been in talks with a number of studios including Sony and Paramount to find a distributor, but they’re putting this project on a fast track and shooting is expected to start on June 1st, 2010 in London.
This will mark Scorsese’s first gig in the children’s world, following the footsteps of notable filmmakers who’ve been doing the same successfully like Wes Anderson (The Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Spike Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are), kid-friendly films with themes that adults can relate to.
Although.. with Scorsese in charge, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the characters gets wacked in the end and then sleeps with the fishes… I doubt it though, the screenplay is written by John Logan (Gladiator, Sweeney Todd) who wrote Scorsese’s The Aviator, Logan’s last kid-friendly work was Sinbad: The Legend Of The Seven Seas.
