Previously co-creator Kevin Eastman said that there’s going to be a New Live action movie of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES but then writer Stephen Murphy denied it and called it complete nonsense.
My head hurts.. so is there or is there not going to be one?
MTV got to talk with co-creator Peter Laird who with Kevin Eastman created these four awesome cowabunga mutant dudes. Laird basically said that there’s no movie yet on the horizon but something is in the planning stages, it will not be live action or animated like TMNT, it will by hybrid and no, we’re not talking about that car..
“As it stands now, there is no intention of doing another live-action film like the first three, with actors and stuntmen in actual Turtle suits, contrary to what was said by Kevin. We have pretty much decided that the next “TMNT” movie should be what we’ve been calling a “hybrid” — that is to say, live-action humans and sets combined with very realistic CGI Turtles (and possibly some other CGI characters).”
“The storyline for this new “hybrid” movie has not been settled on yet. We’re still batting some different ideas around. The sky’s the limit. My preference would be a story which fits into TMNT movie continuity in some way. But nothing has been decided”
So, it’s going to look much like last year’s family movie Alvin and the Chipmunks, which I thought was kinda cool, don’t you think?
Can you imagine the four turtles look that way in that particular format?
Peter Laird thought the animated movie TMNT wasn’t bad but he wished it could’ve been better and I wish it wasn’t so children oriented. It was a fun family movie but I want Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that can have my sense humor too, just like in the olden days,
Speaking of which, Laird talks about the graphics between how it was in the original three movies and TMNT.
“As much as I loved what Jim Henson and his crew accomplished with those rubber suits in the first “TMNT” live-action movie, I believe that CGI — especially now that it has reached the incredible level it has these days — is the way to go to realize fantastic creatures like the Turtles. The expressions the animators were able to get on the Turtles in this last movie were simply amazing”
So… if a live action movie’s going to happen someday, who will get to play the human characters? I love the actress who played April from the original movies, she was hot but we all can assume that she’s probably old is probably a mother by now,.. a hot mom… but still not good enough anymore to play April but Laird some names in mind.
“I think Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar did wonderful work voicing the Casey and April characters in the recent CGI “TMNT” movie, and I think it would be really cool if we could get them to reprise those roles, but this time “in the flesh.” I think that might be the first time something like that has happened.”
“I don’t really know which characters will appear in it. It would be fun to do something with the Shredder, but I am also excited about the possibility of creating some new characters for the movie”
I can go with that! Just look at Batman Begins,.. it revamped the franchise but didn’t start by introducing Batman’s ultimate enemy, The Joker, not until the sequel.
But Laird says they have no intention of Remaking the first movie so we scratch Origin concept for good.
He also expressed interest in hiring Steve Barron who helmed the first movie to return and direct the next TMNT movie but no offer has been made or accepted yet.
I think that’s a bad idea… because it’s new era now, and a new TMNT movie deserves a new vision from today’s awesome director.
Tim Burton didn’t direct Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan did and the rest is history. Get my point?
