Ever since Gore Verbinsky who directed all three Pirates Of The Caribbean said he won’t be handling the fourth installment, Disney has been trying to find a worthy replacement, I didn’t think it’d be a big problem, any director would love a chance to work with Johnny Depp. This past summer, it was said that that one of the top candidates was Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs Of A Geisha). I think Marshall is a great director, but God forbid he turns PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES into a musical movie, I’m exaggerating of course. Well, Marshall’s involvement has been confirmed, he said it himself…
Via AICN, at the recent DGA screening, when asked about this, Marshall said..
y’know, it’s something that I was offered and never in the world thought I would do but then I was like ‘why not?’… I’m doing ‘Pirates of the Caribbean….”’
He also said he had a wonderful meeting with Johnny a little while ago and that they’re both excited to work together.
The franchise is officially in good hands, but we’ll see if Marshall can steer the boat to more exciting horizon, I’m saying that only because At World’s End was huge disappointment to me. Sure it banked lots of money at the box office but it was 3 pointless hours, not to mention Chow Yun Fat is a great actor but the movie didn’t use his fullest potential and that ticked me off.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES is based the book by author Tim Powers, that features the legendary Blackbeard, here’s the official synopsis of the book…
“Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father’s inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner–and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands. The legendary Blackbeard is assembling a ruthless navy of pirates living and undead to voyage to the fabled Fountain of Youth, and Jack Shandy must use magic, swordsmanship, and even his puppeteer skills to free himself and the girl he has fallen in love with from Blackbeard’s deadly supernatural domination.”
The movie’s co-screenwriter Terry Rossio told Empire that PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES will be inspired by Tim Powers‘ book, so it’s not necessary going to be a complete adaptation of the book.
Disney expects production to start in May 2010, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES will open in summer 2011
