The new STAR TREK Movie that will focus on the young crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is going to be released next year. Recently, filmmaker Kevin Smith supposedly have seen the print and loved it.
Some fans however still feel like their hero William Shatner should’ve been cast in the movie also along with Leonard Nimoy.
Director J.J. Abrams explained to AMCTv Sci-Fi Wire why that is just not possible…
“It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn’t quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn’t want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It’s funny — a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.”
Sounds like William Shatner still wants to feel the good old days of stardom all over again where the attention’s all on him.
I’m not a Trekkie so I didn’t know about the whole Cpt. Kirk being dead and what not.
But I can understand the disappointment. When word got out that the New Terminator Movie was going to be made and Arnold was not going to be part of it, I was appalled, saying that there just can’t be a Terminator movie without Arnold.. it’s an abomination!
Some movies and the characters are so tied together, they become one and the same, people just can’t imagine one without the other but I have strong confidence in the brilliance of the vision of director J.J. Abrams that he will bring a new perspective, a new story that will take us bold go where no previous Star Trek movies have gone before.
For the record, J.J. Abrams could’ve simply just said something along the line of what Betty White said at the roast of William Shatner a few years ago, “You’re supposed to explore the galaxy, not fill it!”
William Shatner is old and fat and is no Cpt. Kirk anymore.. plain and simple!
