I am a bit upset that I didn’t go to Sundance Film Festival 2010 but o well, what can one do now. It’s interesting though to hear which little indie movie is bound to be the next big thing this year. One of which is BURIED starring Ryan Reynolds (Watch the teaser trailer). I’ve read some of the reviews from the other bloggers who got to see it in Utah and it’s been nothing but praises. Similar response I heard about Duncan Jones‘ Moon the year before but we don’t see Moon getting any closer to Oscars…
So what does it mean to be getting rave reviews at Sundance? Is it an Oscar guarantee or just an Oscar hopeful? Or Oscar wishful thinking? Either way, LA Times reported that Lionsgate has picked up the North American distribution rights for BURIED, the studio behind Saw and Precious bought it for $3.2 Million beating the competition that was Fox Searchlight.
The Lionsgate president of acquisition and co-productions said BURIED reminds us that all it takes for a movie to become unforgettable is “a great story, inventive filmmaking and brilliant acting,”
I couldn’t agree more but I’ll have to judge BURIED for myself when it hits theaters which is expected to happen around late spring.
Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is a U.S. citizen working as a contract driver in Iraq. After a swift and sudden attack on his convoy, he awakens to find himself buried alive inside a coffin with nothing more than a lighter, a cell phone, and little memory of how he ended up there. Faced with limited oxygen and unlimited panic, Paul finds himself in a tension-filled race against time to escape this claustrophobic deathtrap before it’s too late. directed by Rodrigo Cortes with the script by Chris Sparling. It is literally 80 minutes of Reynolds in a coffin. Previous earlier script review said this claustrophobic flick is a “top-notch storytelling”.
