You will soon notice that when I post my list of best movies of 2008 that it will definitely include the foreign Vampire movie LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, I don’t care what they say or how big the result will show for TWILIGHT, I will stand by my decision that LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is the better movie this year as far as this genre is concerned (Read my review). This is why I’m very upset at director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) for wanting to Remake the whole thing and make it American. He told MTV about what he’s going to do..
“I’m keeping it in the early 80s. I love the setting of it being in a snowy locale. I’ve been thinking of Colorado, maybe Littleton.”
“The movie and the book are incredibly Swedish yet there’s something so universal about the tale of this kid and something that in the context of an American story could be completely different while being very consistent with the original story. There’s something about it that can be an American mythic tale.”
“I see the film as essentially being the fantasies of this 12 year old who’s having such a hard time. It would never be that overt where you would watch the movie and say that’s a dream but to me that is kind of an organizing principle,” Reeves told MTV. “I had such a personal reaction when I saw the movie and when I read the book. I felt like there was an opportunity to do something incredibly personal while still being in a genre arena.”
What next, huh?! he’s going to do it the same style he did with Cloverfield.. the shaky hand-held camera work that made audiences throw up from dizziness?! Damn you, Matt Reeves!
They say ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.. well, there’s nothing broke about LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, it’s good just the way it is, It’s even better than half of the crapola Hollywood brings to theaters every weekend.
And where’s the respect for originality nowadays, huh?! It used to take years before you remake something, but Chris Rock is going to remake Death at Funeral which opened last year and now this?!
They also say that ‘imitation is the best form of flattery’, well, there’s nothing flattering about this one, I tell ya that much.
If you haven’t seen LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, then please put that title in your must-see list and go to the nearest local art house theater, check it out and you’ll see why I’m very all gung-ho about it.
