I heard once that after Slumdog Millionaire, director Danny Boyle wanted to return to Mumbai to possibly make a thriller movie. Well, he’s returning to that place alright, but thriller isn’t exactly what he has in mind. Via slashfilm, apparently according to livemint, Boyle has bought the rights to the 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist MAXIMUM CITY: BOMBAY LOST AND FOUND by Indian author Suketu Mehta, for an undisclosed sum
Part essay, part travelogue, throughout the entire production of Slumdog, Boyle held on to this particular book like it was his bible because it gave him insights to the the city. The thing is, the project might not go into production anytime soon because Boyle is kept busy trying to find decent homes for his Slumdog child stars who badly need homes.
But, via digitalspy, the possible star of MAXIMUM CITY has been mentioned and the name is Aamir Khan, if we were to compare him to our stars over here, I’d say he’s like the Bollywood equivalent to John Travolta, more or less and that’s only because Bollywood films require lots of dancing.
Khan starred in the Oscar nominated best foreign language film, Lagaan (Check out the clip) and is rumoured to be starring alongside Kate Winslet in Pan Nalin’s upcoming film.
Here’s the official synopsis of the book..
“A native of Bombay, Suketu Mehta gives us an insider’s view of this stunning metropolis. He approaches the city from unexpected angles, taking us into the criminal underworld of rival Muslim and Hindu gangs; following the life of a bar dancer raised amid poverty and abuse; opening the door into the inner sanctums of Bollywood; and delving into the stories of the countless villagers who come in search of a better life and end up living on the sidewalks.”
