New Zealand wants to have its own Hollywood sign. Via TheOneRingNet and Stuff, the image above is just an artist’s impression. The intention is to celebrate the heart of New Zealand’s film industry behind such powers as Lord Of The Rings thanks to the country’s most valuable filmmaker, Peter Jackson….
The WELLYWOOD sign will be built at Wellington Airport on the Miramar site which it own, the sign will mimic the famous Hollywood sign in Los Angeles. The difference is this one is smaller…90 feet long and 10 feet tall, the Hollywood sign is 200 feet long and 50 feet tall.
The WELLYWOOD sign is going to be only a mile away from Jackson’s WETA wizard shop, the FX place of LOTR and AVATAR’s Pandora.
But not everybody is happy about this idea.. there are currently 2 active Facebook pages opposing the sign… “A WELLYWOOD sign on the Miramar Cutting hill is a STUPID idea” and the “Hey, let’s NOT have a “WELLYWOOD” sign in Wellington”
I think it’s not a bad idea at all.. I remember my friend from Canada came to town, we took her to Hollywood and all she wanted was to get a better, closer photographic shot of the Hollywood sign. Tourists love those things and having a WELLYWOOD sign might be good for that community.. my only suggestion is.. change the name.. cause WELLY just doesn’t have a cool ring to it.
