Not too long ago, it was announced that filmmaker Terry Gilliam (Time Bandits, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) would take care an unfinished business, by that I mean he’d return to direct THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE, his old passion project based on Miguel de Cervantes‘ classic 17th century romantic tale but production was put to a stop due to bad weather, destroyed sets and lead actor Jean Rochefort’s back problems. The unfortunate situation, however, gave birth to a docu titled Lost In La Mancha
At the time, it was said that Gilliam was trying to re-hire Johnny Depp again as a modern-day ad executive who travels back in time and is mistaken for Sancho Panza by Don Quixote but the concerns have become reality, to nobody’s surprise because Depp spoke recently via CHUD, implying that he’s not sure whether he’d do QUIXOTE all over again
‘I love Terry and I’d do personally anything the guy wants to do,’ Depp said. ‘The thing with Quixote is that my dance card is pretty nutty for the next couple of years, so I’d hate to put him in a position to wait for me. That would be wrong.’
We went there and tried for something and whatever it was – the elements and whatever got up beneath us were there and were documented well in that film Lost in La Mancha. I don’t know if it’s right for me to go back there.’
It’s no secret that Depp is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, despite the fact that he can steal some time in between to go to his private island in Bahamas. In his pocket, he’s got Pirates of the Caribbean 4, The Lone Ranger, not to mention In The Hand of Dante and Caliber and more. I’m sure he’s bound by contracts to do each of those many projects by a certain year which makes it harder for him to free himself for Gilliam.
Who do you think is worthy enough to replace Depp for THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE project? Maybe Jude Law or Collin Farrell could step in.
