I know we all want Christopher Nolan to do another Batman Film, hell if he could get a penny for every time anybody asked him when he’s gonna come up with a third movie he’d be more rich than he is now. But the fact remains, the genius isn’t thinking about getting on the caped-crusader job any time soon, and can you blame him?!.. THE DARK KNIGHT comes out on DVD tomorrow and I’m betting it’s going to kick every other DVD out there in the groin as far as rental and sales are concerned. And with the re-releasing of the movie come January 23rd, 2009, Nolan and WB will be focusing on getting those Oscars that they deserve, especially one for Heath Ledger’s awesome supporting role.
USA today recently had a chat with Christopher Nolan, analyzing why most third installments turn out disastrous (Godfather 3, Superman 3, Spiderman 3)
“I don’t know why they’re hard to do,” Nolan says. “Maybe there’s so much expectation to them. But I wouldn’t want to do one if it weren’t going to be as good as the first or second. That’s not respectful to the fans.”
“It was obvious when the box office was so big ($530 million domestically) that we had underestimated how ready fans were to reboot the franchise,” he says. “The worst thing you could do now that you’ve gotten the plane back in the air is mess up the landing.”
Well said, Nolan
Take all the time you need,.. just when you return, please make it right like you always do.
Nolan also talked about how the DVD won’t have much deleted scenes because Nolan is a big believer of including most scenes in the final print.
“For my past three films, I really haven’t had scenes that didn’t make it in the movie,” he says. “If it’s in the final script, I tend put it on screen.”
Any outtakes, however, were intentionally left off the DVD. “I don’t like outtakes or gag reels,” Nolan says. “I don’t think it’s respectful to the actors, who signed on to have their performance on screen, not the takes that didn’t work out. It discourages actors from going all-out if they think every mistake is going on the disc.”
By the way, according to slashfilm, some of the Best Buy stores, Circuit City, Blockbuster Videos and Virgin Megastores are going to open on Midnight to launch The Dark Knight DVD/Blu-ray on Monday Night.
I’ll just wait till the sun comes up.
