Still no sign that the BATTLESHIP movie based on Hasbro’s popular game, is worthy of our anticipation. When the world was informed that the enemies in the movie will be aliens, I asked why creatures from outer space would want to limit themselves to our ocean, if they have alien technology, then they’re simply no match for our heroes at sea. That question has been answered thanks to Latinoreview and CHUD, the blogs that got to spend time with Berg and pick his brain about what he had in mind for the story and I gotta tell ya, I’m waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out from behind the bushes and tell me that I got punk’d because what you’re about to read after this jump is unbelievably lame. Who in the right mind would think the following is a freakin’ cool idea?!…
Ok, before we get to Berg’s excerpts, here are some things you need to keep in mind.
The alien race is called The Regents. ILM is in charge of the VFX, so that’s probably the only decent thing about this movie. Berg is getting some help from the Navy. And yes, there will be parallels from the game including the line ‘You sank my battleship’
There’s a group of life forms from some other planet have come to our planet for something. They’ve got a very specific agenda. That agenda is not global domination. It’s an agenda and that agenda puts them into conflict with members of our military. Their technology is relatable. It’s not incredibly far out and unbeatable. It’s comprehensible.
They have a similar biological make-up to us, and they come from a place with a similar ecology to ours. Our planet is of interest to us ecologically.
I would actually say it’s more A Bridge Over the River Kwai. They’re trying to build something because they’re in trouble, and they need a power source. They’re trying to get something completed, and they’re not particularly concerned with any life that [gets in their way]. They don’t have anything against you, but if you interfere with their agenda, they’ll kill you.
Some of [the alien ships] are very violent. Some of them aren’t, but some of them are the equivalent of our destroyers. They fire ballistics, explosive ballistics.
[The Regent ship is] able to move in different directions. It’s not entirely hydrofoil, but if you’ve ever seen slow motion of water bugs, how they can move along the sea, think about that.
They’ve got a problem. Upon arrival one of their ships is severely damaged and that poses a logistic problem for them.
These ships don’t constantly show up on our radar; we can’t find them. The ways we go about fighting them is a recurring theme throughout the film.
Some take more shots to sink and kill than do others. Just like our ships. But they’re killable.
The Captain of the Destroyer is the protagonist. He’s got a team of five guys who are sort of…if you looked at the guy who gave us the tour of the ship, the number two in command, the XO, the CO and then there was the mustache guy who was controlling the control room and then there was the Scotty character. That guy is really a modern day Scotty. If he would’ve taken you down to the engine room it would’ve blown your mind at how massively complex these engines are.
Head on over to Latinoreview and CHUD for more report including Berg’s thoughts on HANCOCK 2 and THE RUNDOWN 2 and that hilarious Colbert spoof.
But seriously though what do you think about Berg’s story for BATTLESHIP so far?
Is that a recipe for the worst movie of 2011 or what?!
BATTLESHIP opens August 5th, 2011
