You would think that after the movie’s great opening weekend, that the attention will now be directed to the adaptation I’ve been waiting for, Angels & Demons which opens this weekend. But nope, the STAR TREK mania is still alive and well. According to Comingsoon.net, not only did the movie earn a damn good $79 Million in 3 days, $3 million higher than what Paramount initially estimated. J.J. Abrams’ new take on the classic franchise. also broke the records for IMAX theaters.. $8.5 million from 138 IMAX® theatres domestically contributed 11% to the $79 Million and internationally, it earned $1.1 million from 25 IMAX screens, bringing the total worldwide IMAX box office to $9.6 million. Impressive!
And here’s a couple of more for all you Trekkies,.. ehm, I mean Trekkers out there..
According to The Daily Telegraph, actor Zachary Quinto who plays young Spock in the movie, couldn’t do the famous Vulcan salute. He couldn’t get his fingers to do the V-shaped gesture and so they had him use a skin-protective superglue, like they use in hospitals, to stick his fingers together. Word has it the old William Shatner had the same trouble too so he used fishing line to tie his fingers together
Speaking of the old bastard, the talk of whether or not William Shatner should’ve done a cameo in STAR TREK has been going on for as long as I could remember, and by that I mean since the beginning of this project. Due to Shatner’s ego, he didn’t want to appear for just one small scene. If you ask me, the movie’s great as it is already without Shatner’s involvement. But what was that small scene? io9 had a chat with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and they revealed what they had in the initial script…SPOILER ALERT!
Kurtzman: The very last scene when Spock and Spock meet each other, finally. And elder Spock is convincing young Spock that he couldn’t interfere, because it would have diverted [Kirk and Spock] away from their friendship. And that their friendship is the key to the whole sort of shebang.
Orci: He gave him a recorded message from Kirk.
Kurtzman: He [elder Spock] said, “Don’t take my word for it.” And he handed him [younger Spock] a little holographic device and it projected Shatner. It was basically a Happy Birthday wish knowing that Spock was going to go off to Romulus, and Kirk would probably be dead by the time…
