I’m not a fan of Director Sam Raimi’s (Spiderman) movies, not even the other movies that he’s helped produce which were mostly un-scary horror flicks. So I’m not really too keen about the fact that he has been picked by Paramount Pictures to take on the Jack Ryan franchise. Jack Ryan as some of you may know is the character, CIA analyst, created by novelist Tom Clancy.
So far there have been four Jack Ryan movies with three different actors playing him.
Alec Baldwin in The Hunt For Red October
Harrison Ford in Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games
Ben Affleck in Sum of All Fears, which I thought was a terrible movie.
According to Variety…
the intention is to generate several films Raimi would develop and direct, featuring Ryan at a younger, more formative point in his career than previously depicted. One invention the studio is considering is to set the film in the present, with the action triggered by a global threat.
Paramount wants the Ryan movie ready for release in summer 2010.
A young Jack Ryan… what is up with movies and prequel these days?! Terminator 4, The New Star Trek, and now this.
There was rumor some time ago and I posted it HERE a while ago that they might be looking into casting Ryan Gosling as the young Jack Ryan but since then I haven’t heard any development.
But I guess with this Sam Raimi being anointed and all. I guess Directed Philip Noyce who helmed two of the previous movies isn’t returning after all.
I hope Raimi doesn’t turn Jack Ryan’s stories into cheap horror thrills.
