You know how American filmmakers get recognized for their best work? By earning an Oscar statuette…. ya know Asian Filmmakers know that their movies are recognized? By allowing Hollywood to remake their movies.
Eventhough I grew up in Asia, I was not a big fan of Asian movies, there are some, however worth noticing like THE KILLER and of course INFERNAL AFFAIRS which got remade into The Departed… and there’s OLDBOY.
A Korean movie that received so much praises I was surprised no one built a sanctuary for it. From time to time, there’ll be foreign movies that make Hollywood go “hmm… why didn’t we think of that?!”
Opened in 2003, directed by Chan Wook-Park, the original movie was about a man who gets kidnapped and held captive for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge. The remake used to have the name director Justin Lin attached to the project, but he’s too busy making not-so-awesome movies like the upcoming Fast And Furious.
According to Variety, there’s a possibility that one of the greatest directors of all time might take control, and yes I’m talkin’ about Steven Spielberg. And the person he wants to be the star is Will Smith. They’ve always wanted to work on a movie together but just never got around to do it. At one point, there was a rumor that Smith might star in Spielberg’s now-put-on-halt drama THE TRIAL OF CHICAGO 7 but rumor is all it ever was.
And so, a remake of OLDBOY would definitely bring out again Spielberg’s ‘dark, gloomy’ style shown in Munich, and A.I. and it will bring out again Will Smith’s ability to show anguish, driven by something of the past (I Am Legend, I Robot)
Will Smith is awesome and all but I’ve always picture this character played by someone like Christian Bale.
* In celebration of this info, here’s the trailer for OLDBOY
Oh look, a typo!
well, to be fair,
I did type this post at 1 AM in the morning
Hehe, yeah… but a typo is still a typo =P
