When I was in NYC for New Year’s Eve, I heard about the info on Sony not wanting to push Duncan Jones‘ excellent Sci-Fi flick MOON for Oscar’s consideration. Jones himself who’s been pushing for at least a nomination for Sam Rockwell’s excellent one man performance tweeted his upset at Sony’s lack of effort for MOON’s Oscar campaign, it didn’t even want to send screeners to voters. According to Movieline, Sony’s reason for this decision is due to fear of piracy…
“The DVD and Blu-ray come out on Jan. 12 — next Tuesday — and it was felt that to preserve the integrity of the film, we didn’t want to send screeners,” the rep told me. “We’re concerned about piracy. The thing about Moon is that its particular genre is very predisposed toward being uploaded onto the Web. We really just wanted to protect that aspect of it. It’s a simple as that. […] A lot of publicity for Moon is coming out next week. Hopefully that will remind all the consumers, all the readers — and especially any awards folks — that this terrific title is out there.”
What a weak excuse.. They could’ve just honestly said “o we’re vouching for An Education instead”…I remember The Wackness didn’t even get the same fighting chance and that was also Sony Pictures Classic.
That said, despite the fact that in my review I highly praised Rockwell, at the end of the year, sadly he didn’t make it in my top 5 greatest actors of 2009. Not to belittle Rockwell or anything but there were just better performances last year. Rockwell gave his all, it was his finest hour but at this point, whether or not Sony has anything to do with it, I don’t think he is gonna get an Oscar nomination.
By the way, MOON hits DVD next week.
