There classic titles that I haven’t seen yet. As a movie buff, I always feel obligated to check out every last one of them. A bunch of classic movies out there that are still worth knowing, one title I missed out on is the 1956 sci-fi flick FORBIDDEN PLANET, (I’m gonna see if my go-to local rental store carries it). I mean, it even starred Leslie Nielsen, way before he became the face for spoof movies.
A filmmaker often dreams of doing a project that he’s always wanted to do ever since he was in his mother’s womb. For instance, J. Michael Straczynski (damn, that’s a tough last name to spell), he’s known for writing a bunch of Sci-Fi projects like the once popular Babylon 5.
The minute super producer Joel Silver bought the rights to FORBIDDEN PLANET for him to make a new version of, Straczynski came in his pants from excitement.. well, maybe not that graphic, but it was like a dream come true for him.
But he didn’t reveal much about what he’s going to do when he told MTV..
“I told [producer] Joel [Silver] this is how you do ‘Forbidden Planet’ without pissing on the original that no one has ever thought of,” said Straczynski. “When I told [the idea] to him, his eyes lit up. It’s not a remake. It’s not a reimagining. It’s not exactly a prequel. You’ll have to see it. It’s something that no one has thought of when it comes to this storyline.”
So what is it then? I hate it when people do this,… When I was a kid, my cousin used to ‘torture’ me for not telling me what she’s got for my Christmas present, all she ever said was “Just wait and see” all the way til the Christmas freakin’ Day.
For those of us who are not familiar with the original FORBIDDEN PLANET.. here’s the short synopsis:..”An expedition is sent from Earth to Altair in the constellation of Aquilae (some 17 light years from Earth) to discover what happened to a colony of settlers on its fourth planet, Altair-4. What they discover is how and why an alien race of geniuses destroyed itself overnight while leaving their technology intact at some point in the distant, distant past.”
One thing for sure,.. Straczynski is going to do his homework to get this movie right.
“[When coming] up with the Krell backstory and who they are, I sat down with some of the nation’s best minds in astrophysics and planetary geology and A.I. and asked them — based on what we know now — what will a million years from now look like? The goal is to put things in there you’ve never seen before.”
* In celebration of this info, here’s the trailer for FORBIDDEN PLANET
