This segment is Part of my OSCAR OBSERVATION ‘09
They say that when you spend much time with someone, that someone’s skills, habits or personalities might rub off on you. Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep shared screen time back in 2006 in the movie THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Meryl Streep played the high and mighty editor of a world renowned style magazine while Anne Hathaway was her assistant who wished to become a columnist but the boss from hell gave her a hard time day in and day out.
Meryl Streep was nominated for that role and did not win and although I thought Anne did a decent job, her time to shine was not meant to arrive that year either. This year however, it’s student vs. teacher because Anne is all grown up and she tackled a very challenging role as the younger sister who’s the blacksheep of the family in RACHEL GETTING MARRIED, while Meryl Streep received a nomination for her uptight, stubborn, explosive performance as the Catholic nun who’s determined to bring down her competition by relying only on her DOUBT.
If Anne gets the golden statuette, we can bet she’ll be thanking Meryl in her speech and about how she’s been a mentor and all. But I have a feeling that neither of them will get to go home with that top prize because actress Melissa Leo (Frozen River) might cause an upset. Leo could be the surprise of the evening. Having said that, I have a feeling this won’t be the last we’ll see the Anne Vs. Meryl episode, embrace yourself for a sequel.
