Paul Feig, Kristen Wiig, Judd Apatow

If you don’t know the name Paul Feig, it might ring a bell if you remember as far back as the late 90s because he and best buddy Judd Apatow with a bunch of other wacky friends came up with the short-lived series Freaks And Geeks that gave big breaks to some of today’s comedy movie stars like Seth Rogen, Jason Segel. Hollywood Reporter said that Feig and Apatow will reunite to develop an untitled comedy starring Kristen WiigRead the rest of this entry »

When Comedy Turns Into Drama

Comedy Turns Into Drama

HEADS UP! This article may contain SPOILER!
2009 was not a good year for comedy fans. Sure we had I Love You Man, Zombieland and The Hangover to make us laugh, actually I believe that they’re going to go down as cult hits or instant classic. But then there were Dance Flick, Land Of The Lost, Year One, Jennifer’s Body, Night At The Museum 2, Bruno, I Love You Beth Cooper, The Ugly Truth, The Goods, The Men Who Stare At Goats, Old Dogs and Gentlemen Broncos. One disappointment after another, somehow something got lost in the jokes.
But what I notice happening more this year compared to the previous is that we had more comedy that suddenly switches gear to drama. I’m not talking about dramedies like Little Miss Sunshine and Juno. I’m talking about comedy movies that sell themselves as a laugh fest but they surprised us by how dramatic they could be as the plot progressed. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t… Read the rest of this entry »

ANCHORMAN 2 At 75 Years Old

Posted by Rama On August - 27 - 2009

anchorman

Judd Apatow who produced Will Ferrell’s classic hit ANCHORMAN was pressed by Empire recently to see if any development has been happening to a possible sequel. He said Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are currently busy making a cop buddy comedy with Mark Wahlberg titled THE OTHER GUYS but he also revealed an interesting idea how they picture Ron Burgundy and the gang in ANCHORMAN 2

“When we made Anchorman, Adam and Will had a lot of ideas about what the sequel would be – they’d always laugh about where they’d take the characters.”
“The great thing is, Will can be any age and play that character. Those anchormen sometimes have their jobs until they’re 75 years old. So we would always laugh that this movie could work if everybody’s really elderly.”

Ha! I know Will Ferrell hasn’t been funny lately but I’m really digging this idea. Ron Burgundy and cocky co-hosts have always thought they’re the best newspeople in the world. Imagine bringing them to present time when nobody else thinks they’re cool except themselves. They are now old, ancient, relic. There would be new younger anchormen threatening their existence and it’s about how they would re-claim their rightful position in history and get the respect they deserve… through fart jokes, sexist punch lines, cannonball and a hispanic Ben Stiller cameo of course.

3 More Universal Films With Judd Apatow

Judd Apatow Leslie Mann

I’ve watched Judd Apatow’s new movie FUNNY PEOPLE the other day, I haven’t posted m review yet but it was definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. Some may find it disappointing because it was 2 hours and 26 minutes long and more personal and dramatic than your previous Apatow presentation (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) but I think it will at least get a nod for Golden Globe Best Picture comedy.
According to Reuters, Apatow has signed 3 more picture deals with Universal that has backed him up all this time. He’s been making movies for them every other year consistently, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes up with another one in 2 years.
FUNNY PEOPLE topped its opening weekend with $23.4 Million, not an extravagant result compared to this summer’s comedy hit, The Hangover, but that doesnt’ shake Universal’s faith on Apatow’s brand name. He still doesn’t go astray from his type of humor and his target audience and that’s what Universal is relying on. Besides, Universal’s previous comedy, Will Ferrell’s LAND OF THE LOST didn’t do so hot with the critics, fans and at the box office,.. so Apatow is their only salvation.

Judd Apatow To Cry With Kimberly Peirce

Judd Apatow Kimberly Peirce

Can’t wait to check out FUNNY PEOPLE this weekend, AICN said it’s Judd Apatow’s masterpiece, now that is some praise, because only a few movies in the history of cinema deserve that honor. ComingSoon.net talked to the biggest comedy director today, Judd Apatow and found out that he’ll be developing future projects with Kimberly Peirce, the director of critically acclaimed Boys Don’t Cry and the not so powerful drama, Stop-Loss.

The website tracked down Peirce and this was what she had to say for now..
“I am thrilled and excited to be working with Judd on an Untitled Romantic Sex Comedy that I am writing to direct.”
Peirce’s Official Site described what this project might be about..
“Kimberly is also writing UNTITLED ROMANTIC COMEDY ‘08 in the vein of Pedro Almodovar and Woody Allen in which a “guy’s” group of friends resuscitates him from the worst possible breakup, and trains him to find true love in this gender twist on the classic romantic comedy.”
Apatow also said he’s going to be working on something with John Carney, the director of Once, but no one knows what that something is yet.

Judd Apatow Briefly Interviews Adam Sandler

Posted by Rama On July - 17 - 2009

The vibrant video above is an Inside Look from yahoo of director Judd Apatow interviewing Adam Sandler, the star of his new movie FUNNY PEOPLE. The video’s very brief but it’s cool because these two comedians used to be actual roommates back in the day and you can still sense the atmosphere of respect that the two show to each other.

As we all know by now, today’s biggest comedy director Judd Apatow has FUNNY PEOPLE this summer and it contains come fake movies starring the lead character, George Simmons, played by Adam Sandler.
Apatow’s been blogging for MTV and now he’s revealed these 3 extended clips of those fake movies that unfortunately won’t make it in the final cut but they’re here for us to enjoy online.
The first one above is my favorite because I’m Asian and there’s lots of hilarious stereotypical jokes in this one, titled SAYONARA DAVEY, a politically incorrect foreign exchange student movie featuring the M.D. comedian Ken Jeong who’s been very popular lately (Role Models, The Hangover, Couple’s Retreat)
The second one is MERMAN, a spoof of Splash, Sandler as half-man, half-fish magically gets himself a pair of legs but has a hard time walking.
The third one is DOG’S BEST FRIEND. It’s about a cop whose partner is a dog that just got shot and killed in the line of duty.

Here’s what Apatow says about the challenges of making these clips..
How does one make a fake movie clip? It was important to us that the clips did not feel like parodies of movies but instead seemed like movies that could actually get made. It makes the clips potentially less funny than parody clips because they could not be truly over-the-top awful, they just needed to be bad the way a bad movie is bad. That being said, after making each of these clips we kind of wanted to see the entire movie.

Gotta love red band trailers, man! And Judd Apatow comedy isn’t for kids to enjoy (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up). Universal has released the new trailer, via MySpace, that requires you to verify your age before you can enjoy some more stand-up, some more cameos, some more of Eric Bana, some more of Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill making fun of Seth Rogen.
