Comedy Turns Into Drama

HEADS UP! This article may contain SPOILER!
2009 was not a good year for comedy fans. Sure we had I Love You Man, Zombieland and The Hangover to make us laugh, actually I believe that they’re going to go down as cult hits or instant classic. But then there were Dance Flick, Land Of The Lost, Year One, Jennifer’s Body, Night At The Museum 2, Bruno, I Love You Beth Cooper, The Ugly Truth, The Goods, The Men Who Stare At Goats, Old Dogs and Gentlemen Broncos. One disappointment after another, somehow something got lost in the jokes.
But what I notice happening more this year compared to the previous is that we had more comedy that suddenly switches gear to drama. I’m not talking about dramedies like Little Miss Sunshine and Juno. I’m talking about comedy movies that sell themselves as a laugh fest but they surprised us by how dramatic they could be as the plot progressed. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t… Read the rest of this entry »

THE INVENTION OF LYING Review

THE INVENTION OF LYING, in my book, is a comedy classic. It’s hilarious and brilliant. It’s unfortunate many won’t be able to embrace it. I think it’s only funny if you like Ricky Gervais’ British original version of The Office, if you’re familiar with his sense of humor because if you think… Read the rest of this entry »

Usually, it’d be EW that would release some kind of segment that would showcase images from upcoming movies that will be released in a certain season but now it’s MTV that’s holding a Fall 2009 movie preview and has a batch of these brand spankin’ new images. I only include the cool ones over here so if you wanna check out a picture of Adam Brody (why?) you can go OVER THERE to view more.

THE INVENTION OF LYING Trailer

UPDATE: The domestic version is also available below

The trailer of the upcoming comedy THE INVENTION OF LYING from writer/director/actor and The Office creator Ricky Gervais has hit the web, via yahoo.uk. You can watch the trailer using the media player below temporarily.. until I find a smoother, better working one.The movie was initially called Other Side of the Truth, which didn’t sound as cool. It’s not a laugh riot but it’s witty and the whole deal with him lying to convince a woman to have sex with him, successfully I might add, is funny, in a sense that it’s every man’s dream to have such ability.
I just hope it doesn’t end up a disappointment like Gervais’ previous lead starring effort, Ghost Town.
Also starring Jason Bateman, and.. my favorite hot nerd, Tina Fey, just thought I should mention that.

‘The Invention of Lying’ takes place in an alternate reality in which lying – even the concept of a lie – does not even exist. Everyone from politicians to advertisers, to the man and woman on the street speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark (Ricky Gervais) suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realise that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

THE INVENTION OF LYING opens September 25th, 2009

Gervais' TRUTH Movie Gets New Title

Via collider, those of us who may wonder what happened to that one movie THIS SIDE OF THE TRUTH, written and directed by the Brit comedian who’s consistently funny, Ricky Gervais.. the movie’s not around anymore. No worries, it didn’t disappear or anything like that, it has a new title now, that’s all. It’s now called THE INVENTION OF LYING, the change was made for marketing purposes..eventhough Gervais’ blog is still called TSOFTT.
The story is about a world where people only tell the truth until one man discovers he can lie. The movie opens September 25th, 2009

Oh yes, we’ve changed the title by the way. Just when Steve (Merchant) and I had decided on Cemetery Junction after not being allowed to mention anything to do with The Prudential, Matt (Robinson) and I decided to revert to the original title of our film – The Invention of Lying.
I loved This Side of the Truth but we worried that in all the marketing it would be difficult to try to get the concept across. If you go more “on the nose” with the title you can be more creative with trailers and posters. Anyway, here are the final verdicts;
The film previously known at The Man from The Pru is now called CEMETERY JUNCTION
The film previously known as This Side of the Truth is now called THE INVENTION OF LYING
