Guy Ritchie

When info hit the web, that Guy Ritchie was going to direct another EXCALIBUR project housed at WB, 2 things we know, that it’s not the same as Bryan Singer’s EXCALIBUR project which is a remake of the 1981 old movie, and that Ritchie’s version would be based on the take by comic writer Warren Ellis who’s been working on it for a while but now Variety has said something different… Read the rest of this entry »

Guy Ritchie

This is not the Excalibur remake that Bryan Singer (Superman Returns) is set to work on.. that is if he can get to it. The guy’s got X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, JACK AND THE GIANT KILLER and also BATTLESTAR GALACTICA in the bag. So no, this isn’t about Singer’s EXCALIBUR.. this is about the EXCALIBUR to be directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) who is expected to start filming SHERLOCK HOLMES 2 later this year…. GRAVEL Goes Legendary

Gravel

The rate of comic books being adapted into movies seems to be going faster than you can say ‘what just happened’. Another one bites the dust, according to Variety, Legendary Pictures has bought the rights to the popular comic book series GRAVEL created by Warren Ellis, illustrated by Mike Wolfer and published by Avatar Press.
The story centers around British ‘combat magician’ William Gravel, a soldier in the S.A.S. the primary special forces unit of the British Army, who uses his skills in dark magic to moonlight and battle supernatural beings for some extra cash.
Via Avatarpress.com, “Gravel’s missions, and the occasional cash-in-hand work, bring him to toe-to-toe with the most profane and brutal depths of the criminal world. Thank Britain this military trained sorcerer is ready to blast the hell out of the blokes”

The series started a decade ago with the title Strange Kiss and then a sequel, Stranger Kisses and then the third one, Strange Killings which was released in limited series but since 2007, the series has been called just plain GRAVEL and illustrator Wolfer became a co-author
Ellis will write the initial draft of the screenplay for the movie and serve as executive producer

New EXCALIBUR Movie

Excalibur

Comic writer Warren Ellis didn’t get to make a certain announcement at the Comic-Con, so left it for his blog,

“I’m writing a film treatment for Hollywood Gang, who co-produced Frank Miller’s 300. Hollywood Gang have previously optioned my graphic novel (with Chris Sprouse) OCEAN.
On my desk, the treatment is called Untitled Arthurian Project.
On their desk, the project is called EXCALIBUR.
I’m working directly with Gianni Nunnari, Oliver Kramer and Craig Flores (whom I was delighted to bump into on the Warner’s lot the other day) and having a great time.”

The 1981 version starring Helen Mirren, the 2004 Clive Owen movie, and I remember the crappy 2007 movie Last Legion, and many other takes on King Arthur and his legendary sword. I’m not a huge fan of any of them. Either the myth has been so played out or there hasn’t been one really really cool portrayal, but I guess I’m open to something stylized and action-packed like 300

Ellis talked to AICN about what he had in mind..

“differs from the prior 751 King Arthur movies in many ways, but perhaps most obviously in that it is very specifically about the gathering of the Knights.”
