THE BRAVE ONE Review

I love this woman! No matter how old she’s gonna get, somehow she always finds a way to be sexy all the time. I know it sounds disturbing for anyone to be describing Jodie Foster like that, but here are some of the things on the list: She graduated from Yale with magna cum laude, girls with brains are important in my book, she speaks French fluently,… that makes a great date to take to the most romantic place on earth, and she’s won two Oscars, which gives good reason for my admiring her as far as movie is concerned. But I would never attempt an assassination on any President just to impress her like what John Hinkley did, scouts honor!

Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) and her boyfriend (Naveen Andrews) got brutally beaten by a bunch of thugs. After that Erica has never been the same again. She gets herself a gun to protect herself and she becomes this vigilante who takes matters into her own hand. Detective Mercer, investigating the heroic murders, bond a friendship with Erica without knowing who she is and what she’s capable of.

This movie is is hypnotic and I’m not saying that just because I’m a Jodie Foster fan. It holds you from the beginning and lets you in on an emotional ride that the characters are going through while at the same time gets you all jumpy over the things that could happen, driven by vengeance alone.
Many of us want a superhero, a vigilante that would do something about the bad guys on the streets today and usually those guys come in capes or pictured only along the pages of a comic book. This is a different take on it. It’s like Death Wish but more skillfully crafted.

I watched this movie in a theater full of people clapping several times including the last scene where Jodie Foster’s character cast the last judgment on one of the people responsible for her lover’s death.
It’s interesting to see the progression of Jodie Foster’s character from killing for the first time and and eventually she’s not shaking anymore after having killed several times. Personally, I think it’s a very dangerous thing if anyone of us gets used to the feeling of taking someone’s life. It should bother our conscience instead.

We just had Kevin Bacon’s vengeance movie ‘Death Sentence‘, which I thought was a pretty tight movie, but it was more for testosterone audience, whereas the movie ‘THE BRAVE ONE’ analyzes Detective Mercer and Erica and how these two characters started with each standing on opposite sides of the fence and in the end they shared a common conclusion in regards to justice and law. The psychology of it all that makes this more of a thriller rather than action.
I think the audiences were pleased to see Erica get away with it instead of going to jail. We all like to see our heroes go free no matter what bad things they’ve committed. Either that or go out in a bang.

I didn’t like ‘Flightplan’ and I thought ‘Inside Man’ could’ve been better, but after ‘The Brave One’, I hope Jodie Foster will choose to do another flick as heavy metal as this one.
