Seems like Focus Features is giving you New Year’s present in the form of new images from the upcoming THE EAGLE OF THE NINTH, via Yahoo, in addition to the previous one. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland, Mark Strong. So while in spring, Worthington is going to clash with the titans, in fall, Tatum is going to fight the Celtics. I still don’t think Tatum is a talented actor but we’re just going to have to get used to the idea that Hollywood is prepping him to be the next big thing. View all 6 images after the jump…
The Eagle of the Ninth is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (played by Mr. Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Mr. Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia – to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. Mr. Sutherland portrays Marcus’ uncle Aquila, who has retired in Britain; Mr. Strong is cast as Guern, an ex-soldier who holds crucial information about the Ninth.

Channing Tatum has not often been a good actor. But he has had his moments. He was pretty good in Stop-Loss with the scene toward the end in the graveyard really being a stand out. IMO he was phenomenol in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. He needs to build his craft. I’m not sure many of the movies he has been in have encouraged him to do so. Too bad.
what he needs is the ability to react differently to different situations.. it’s not hard to drop a few tears or act angry and explosive.. but what makes you unique is how expressive you are when faced with a certain dialogue or how quickly the audience can see you change from one emotion to a whole other tone within seconds, it could be as simple as a body language or the eye movement… we need to see the character he’s playing, not him.
Ya know how Zoolander was funny because he’s the male model that only has one look for everything.. well, Tatum to me has only one look, one voice for everything.
He’s not effortless.. which brings me to the point that maybe he doesn’t have it to begin with… on the other hand, it is something that can be coached
Yes, the transparency of the self. It can’t be easy or everyone would do it. Tatum is a very physical actor. That’s what made him so perfect for “Saints”. And I think that’s what the casting directors are going for, particularly, perhaps, here. I’ll be interested to see how this one comes out. GI Joe’s profits probably gave him alot of cred with the powers that be, despite his one note acting. This will be his chance to spend that coin and show it to be well invested.
true.. the transparency of the self indeed.. well put.
what we film aficionados need to keep in mind is that when it comes to screen actors, as opposed to stage actors for example.. the movie lives and breathes within the frames of their facial expression…what it tells us.
but you’re right, he’s more of a physical actor.. although he’s also doing romantic drama like the upcoming Dear John.. at least he’s aware of his big fanbase that are girls and makes an effort to cater to his target audience.
