The trailer for the new take, the remake that nobody asked for but it’s here anyway, THE KARATE KID is online, you can watch it using the media player below. Man, can Jaden Smith be any more of a terrible actor than he already is? Hard to believe that his father is an Oscar nominee, guess the talent didn’t pass down. I gotta say, the trailer looks intriguing but I still think this whole thing is a blasphemy to the memory of Pat Morita. Is this going to be one of those that stereotype every Asian, even as kids, knows how to do martial art? What’s with that mustache, Chan?
Well, at least THE KARATE KID is not going to be as dreadful as Jackie Chan’s other movie, The Spy Next Door.. right?… right? Watch the trailer after this jump…
In Columbia Pictures’ The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying – and the feeling is mutual – but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre’s feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.
THE KARATE KID opens June 11th, 2010
hmmm…. a totally different take on the wax on, wax off thing. Take your clothes off, now put it back on?? Who would’ve thought that I was practicing martial arts every morning that I got dressed to work? haha
Seriously though, the concept is better than the original as far as facing some serious martial artists (in China) instead of American wannabe martial artists here in the U.S. The Kid is gonna have to do much better than “the crane”. haha
I’ve changed my mind… I’m giving this flick a chance.
Good observation… seems like they take some concepts from the original and just twist it, so we’ll see some familiar situations that remind me of Morita’s film but not quite the same.
I still don’t get why they keep the title KARATE, when the trailer shows Chan teaching the kid different kinds of martial art skills, not Karate specifically.
Wow, moviebuff is giving this a chance? Stop the press!
Moviebuff you know you are gonna flip out like you did with Ninja Assassin. Think about it you are gonna watch a movie where they can’t get the title right, correct?
Frankie… you know very well why the title is The KARATE Kid. Would you go see the movie THE MARTIAL ARTS KID? Answer: Probably not. This film is based on THE KARATE KID so they’re using the words “Karate Kid” to get the mainstream audience to go see it.
And I’ll only flip out if the movie becomes stupid… like the kid taking on 15 guys that know martial arts too… and wins. What I disliked about Ninja Assassin was that it didn’t push the envelope on the Ninja concept. Instead, they made another movie about one Ninja that can “easily” kill other ninjas even though they outnumber him. They send 50 ninjas to kill Raizo and he defeats them. And he gets cut up pretty good (should have been fatal) but he lives. And I loved how Raizo can kill the ninjas one on one but the bullets from the cops guns couldn’t haha.
Look… As far as Ninja Assassin is concerned, I loved the fight choreography… it was cool, but I didn’t like the rest. I’m still waiting for a “good” ninja movie. As for THE KARATE KID remake… I’ve left my mind open (it used to be shut haha) and decided to wait and see if the movie is passable. I doubt it will even come close to the original but I’m giving it a shot. Nuff said.
