I’m not going to spend too much time on this because seriously I don’t find this to be a surprise at all. At one point, Terrence Malick’s new movie THE TREE OF LIFE was expected to open in 2010 but then back in the summer, we heard it might open later this year which I took with a grain of salt because let’s face it.. this is a Terrence Malick movie and if there’s one thing Malick likes doing is taking his sweet time. He only made 4 movies in 36 years of his career as a filmmaker, and if you’ve seen his movies, you’d know how careful he can be to make sure everything looks like a painting and feels like a poetry. It’s like walking into a philosophical art gallery.
According to Indie Wire, THE TREE OF LIFE will not open this year. Apparition initially wanted to distribute it this Christmas but chief Bob Berney says that it was “wishful. It’s definitely not going to come out this year.” The reason is.. because it won’t be finished in time. O the production was wrapped back in 2008 but you see, once again, it’s a Terrence freakin’ Malick movie so there’s no surprise that he wants to take time in post-production.
The story is about a man who struggles to come to terms with a childhood torn apart by sickness, suffering and death starring Sean Penn, Fiona Shaw, and Brad Pitt. If all goes well, THE TREE OF LIFE could be next year’s Oscar contender.
So I’m not about this as much as I did when I heard SHUTTER ISLAND got moved to February 2010 because unlike THE TREE OF LIFE, the Martin Scorsese thriller was actually already good to go.
