Tia Carrere To Surf The WAVE

Tia Carrerre Rell Sunn

I was watching True Lies for the thousandth time again the other day, for some reason AMC channel kept showing that Arnold flick over and over again like it’s got no other movies to offer. Anyways, Tia Carrere was one of the baddies and then it hit me.. man, whatever happened to Tia Carrere?! She used to be the a sex symbol, a bombshell in the 90s, a hottie in movies like Wayne’s World, Showdown In Little Tokyo, Kull The Conqueror, Rising Sun. But I gotta say, I thought her series Relic Hunter was a joke, a B-quality product. After that she did Lilo & Stitch, which I thought would mark a comeback, but then a string of straight-to-DVD movies marked a decade of career famine until I watched her memorable character in Nip/Tuck.

But for her next project, according to Hollywood Reporter, Tia will return to her roots, get in touch with her heritage. A Hawaiian born, Tia Carrere will play one of the greatest Hawaiian legends, Rell Sunn.
I didn’t know much about Rell Sunn until today, and I thought Hawaiian legend was only Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
Rell Sunn was an American world surfing champion, a pioneer in the world of women’s surfing. She was also Hawaii’s first female lifeguard in 1977 and helped founded the Women’s Professional Surfing Association in 1979. Wait, she had more skills.. an expert diver, a black belt in karate and a hula dancer. She was just all around bionic woman, the more I read her profile, the more respect I have for this amazing human being who sadly succumbed to breast cancer in 1998 at age 47 after battling the disease for 15 years
This will be good for Tia Carrere’s career and her soul. It’s like her homeland is calling her back to do what’s right and start anew.
The biopic is titled WAVE DANCER to be directed by Martha Coolidge. Check this out, the screenplay was written by Simon Wakelin and.. Tia Carrere. Impressive! She’s more than just looks after all. Production will start on location early next year.

Wow, sounds good! I used to watch her Relic show. LOL.

  2. Moviebuff says:

Besides Point Break which only dealt with surfing as a side plot, I can’t recall a “surfing movie” that has ever done well. I might be drawing a blank, but seriously… I don’t see this hitting. Another bomb for Tia, I think.

whether this would be a success, it’s still 50-50 but I think it’s good to see Tia making a biopic instead being a plain old hottie

My friend used to think Relic Hunter was the greatest series on earth LOL
