Action movie stars are in the upcoming Sly Stallone’s testosterone fest THE EXPENDABLES but Jean Claude Van Damme is not part of the explosive party. At a recent press screening, JCVD explains the conversation that took place between him and Sly over the phone. Turns out, Sly never gave him a definitive answer as to what type of character he’d be playing in the movie. I gotta go with Sly on this one. Does it matter what kind of character? Since when is Van Damme a character actor? Even Bruce Willis and Arnold are making cameos just for the hell of it. I think Van Damme thinks too much of himself, I’d understand more if he was De Niro or Pacino, but he’s not, he’s Van Damme for pete’s sake. To be in the movie, and after JCVD and EAGLE PATH and it was between that, he said: “I want you to be in THE EXPENDABLES” and I said: “Whats my character?” And he go: “You know JC, you gonna make lots of money, doesnt matter, you gonna make money. And we go: BOOM, BOOM, BOOM.” [...] Yeah, I understand, but I would like to know what am I doing?” [...] “Well you know, you gonna talk with Jet Li and you gonna have a fight.” And I say: “Keep It.” And he thinks I am a kid. He go: “You know, you win the fight, then I am coming in and Boom, Boom, Boom.” And I said: “What do you mean? BOOM, BOOM, BOOM? Whats my story?” [...] “Who gives a fuck, you gonna make money.” And I said: “SLY I cannot work this way.” And then he hang up on me. Then I call him back like an idiot, an idiot [...] He go: “Ey, this is very insulting, and you insulting me, you.” [...] I said: “SLY, when I saw ROCKY I put the bun on my head and I run like I think I was Rocky.” That was my end story with THE EXPENDABLES. [...] But Stallone is a very very smart man, he’s got a big heart, truly. And he’s a brilliant writer and a brilliant director! That’s why I asking all those questions about characters
Yea… its not like Van Damm has done anything lately. It sounds like testosterone played in that converstation at some kind of level. Van Damm gets insulted by Sly for offering what he thinks is probably a minor part (and hanging up on him) and Sly getting insulted by Van Damm after the call back. But.. I bet anything Sly was thinking “WTF???? You haven’t done shit in years! You should be THANKING me for offering you a part in the flick! You dumbass!” right before he hung up and Van Damm hahahahahahahahahaha

ya, if I were Jean Claude I’d take up on Sly’s offer.. hell at least it’s better dollars than straight to DVD gigs which is what Jean Claude’s been doing for the past.. o I dunno.. more than a decade.
Same here. I would take the part also. I guess JVCD is happy with straight to video movies.
What sucks is that I am a hardcore JVCD fan…I even support the guy on the new Universal Soldier movie. I just don;t understand why he would turn down a fight scene with Jet Li. It’s bad enough he turned one down with Steven Seagal which I am still waiting for.
I support Stallone on this. I would feel insulted by Van Damme also. But I feel that he should have replaced Steve Austin with Marc Decastas. That is magic on screen and he’s a hasbeen action star. I mean hell he was a Crow for christsake and closest one to look like the brendan lee crow.
