What’s Up With MAGDALENA

Magdalena

This one caught me off guard, but thanks to Joblo and MTV interview, we now know a little bit about MAGDALENA project. It’s already got actors, hottie Jenna Dewan (Step Up) as Patience, Luke Goss (Hellboy II) as the mentor Kristoff and to be directed by Ryûhei Kitamura, the helmer of Midnight Meat Train. And now screenwriter Holly Brix talks about the movie’s approach..

I read all the comics and we talked about different versions of the story, but the one I found most compelling was Patience—her arc in becoming the Magdalena. We decided to focus the movie on her. It’s the transfer of power from her mother’s reign as the Magdalena to hers.
It’s definitely a supernatural action movie, so I think ‘DaVinci Code’ is a good reference as far as all the Catholicism in it. But in addition to that story, it’s also a really straightforward action movie.
The movie’s never really been a female action movie, because of Kristof. It’s more of a two-hander. He’s a huge character in it. He’s definitely her mentor and fights right alongside her and teaches her everything she knows.

The origin concept may be a bit of a touchy subject to some, after Jesus was crucified and then resurrected, Mary Magdalene, gave birth to a daughter, Sarah. From this child is descended the holy lineage of the Magdalena, a royal bloodline that passes great power and great honor from mother to daughter, a bloodline of female warriors called THE MAGDALENA
There’s Sister Rosalia, and then her daughter, Sister Mariella, and then there’s Patience, a character that will be the basis for MAGDALENA Movie.
According to Wikipedia, “Kristof found Patience living on the streets of New York City with a newfound friend, a homeless girl called Rowan Barry. Kristof became Patience’s mentor and gave her basic training in her new role. Patience was initially hesitant but gave in to her destiny when Rowan was abducted by agents of an evil force.”
