All this time we’re thinking Spielberg and Will Smith’s attempt for another version of the movie OLDBOY was a remake/reboot/re-imagining, whichever. But apparently that’s not the case, and some may not know this but the 2003 original movie that became a Koran sensation and a cult hit to some, was actually based on another material…

Will Smith told FilmSchoolRejects it will be loyal to the Japanese manga series by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya

“We’re looking at that right now. Not the film though, it’s the original source material,” Smith told FSR. “There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film…”

I looked is up online and the plot sounds similar, I gotta read the book first probably before I find out for sure the differences between that and the 2003 movie adapatation.
“25-year old Shinichi Gotō was kidnapped one fateful night and locked up in a private jail for unknown reasons. After ten years of solitary confinement, with only a television set for company, he was suddenly released. The story follows his quest to hunt down the identities of his captors and uncover the reason behind his imprisonment.”

But still though, Spielberg and Will Smith got Mark Protosevich to adapt the story.. in other words,.. the movie still has a chance of screwing things up.
Rama’s SCREEN reader, Simo expressed his concern in a comment recently and also suggested people like Paul Haggis or Rodriguez to write the script instead of Protosevich.
