Well, I guess it’s bound to happen sooner or later, MTV is not much about music videos anymore, Sci-Fi turned into SyFy because it wanted to broaden its horizon, the competition and today’s trend forces certain network to evolve and adjust. The way I see it, those channels compromised and sacrificed their niche all in the name of trying to get ratings. But in this following case, I can understand the need to change because honestly, I’ve always found The Weather Channel to be the least useful channel on TV. Because I can get the same info about a certain place from my iPhone…
According to Hollywood Reporter, The Weather Channel will now show movies for the first time since its birth 27 years ago and the first movie will be… THE PERFECT STORM. No surprise there. The true story drama starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg will air on Oct. 30, the 18th anniversary of the storm and it begins a four-week period
The intention of the network execs is to have either weather-themed films or just films that have plots in which weather plays a key role.
So get this, other movies that they’ll have for you will be… March of the Penguins,.. makes sense,..the shark thriller Deep Blue Sea, and Misery starring the Oscar Winner Kathy Bates. Wait what, Misery? What the?! Here’s why.. because James Caan’s character begins with a blinding snowstorm. I kid you not, that’s their reason. Ya see their angle.
So do you think his strategy would work? Attracting new fans while keeping the loyal viewers who tune in for news of high pressure systems while in hopes of getting more advertisers money.
What other Weather-related movies that you can think of that The Weather Channel should show?
I think it is a bad idea. If I turn on The Weather Channel I want to see my local on the 8’s and weather. I am sure they will have it below the movies…then again, I don’t want weather during a movie.
Either way I gave up on The Weather Channel on TV; I only go to the website.
They should show Twister! Or not, could you imagine a news cast on during a twister that people have died in then a commercial comes on for “Twister at 8:00″??
I can see that ‘weather below the movies’ thing happening.
I don’t know about the ‘twister at 8′ idea though
But I see what you mean, on the other hand.. The Weather Channel couldn’t think of a better idea to survive.. their ratings have been going down so they’re hoping weather-related movies would be their salvation..
what do you think they should’ve done instead?
